Cajun/Creole Cooking
Published in Paperback by H.P. Books (May, 1986)
Authors: Terry Thompson-Anderson and Terry L. Thompson
Average review score:

Authentic Cajun/Creole Cooking
I was born and raised in southwest Louisiana, and grew up with all of the wonderful Cajun and Creole dishes in this book. This book contains excellent recipes, excellent photographs, and wonderful background text. Also, a list of suppliers is included.

This is the cookbook I have recommended to all of my friends who ask about Louisiana cooking. It's a shame that it's out of print.

Canada and the United States: Ambivalent Allies
Published in Paperback by McGill-Queens University Press (12 August, 2003)
Authors: John Herd Thompson and Stephen J. Randall
Average review score:

An Excellent Introduction to Canadian-American Relations
As the authors point out, Americans rarely think about Canada. Many Canadian professors have made a career about Canada-US relations but few Americans have. This book provides an excellent introduction to this subject. A large part of the book is devoted to history but there are parts about current policy dilemas and issues. It should be essential to anyone trying to understand NAFTA.

Author: Chris Thompson
Average review score:

very well written
Jumps right in and gives the meat and potatos of marine diesel without bogging you down or talking beneath you. Has good humor and excellent diagrams. I read it cover to cover and it actually got me interested in the diesels.

Case of the Silk King (Choose Your Own Adventure Ser.)
Published in Hardcover by Grey Castle Pr (June, 1987)
Author: Shannon Gilligan
Average review score:

Sheer fascination
The series certainly has gone downhill since the glory days. "The Case of the Silk King" is among the best CYOA ever produced.

I don't know if Shannon Gilligan ever wrote another CYOA book, but this one rivals Edward Packard. It loosely takes the real-life story of Jim Thompson, an American silk magnate who disappeared in Thailand, and has the reader pretend to be a young detective asked to track down Thompson years later.

There no real reason tendered for why so many people don't want you to discover the truth, but this minor quibble never distracts from the general quality of the book. It takes the hoary conventions of CYOA books -- especially the use of the exotic locale -- and plays them to the hilt. If I recall correctly (I'm nineteen...it has been years...), you can get killed off by everything from a Bengal tiger to a flash flood if you make the wrong choice.

This is rather unique in the series, in that it takes off on an actual historical happening. CYOA doesn't get any better than this.

(P.S. -- Check out my review of "Your Code Name is Jonah" -- another classic CYOA book. E-mail me...we can talk about the strange hold this series has on the imagination...)

Case Studies in Applied Sport Psychology an Educational Approach: An Educational Approach
Published in Paperback by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company (July, 1998)
Authors: Mark A. Thompson, Ralph A. Vernacchia, and William E. Moore
Average review score:

Delivers an insightful view of the mental side of sports!
The case studies provide an excellent flavor of the mental side of sports for all you "armchair" athletes and sports psychologists to savor. As a psychologist and self-proclaimed athlete, I was entertained and enlightened by the multitude of case studies that Thompson and Vernacchia chose to explore. I found myself relating my own sports-related challenges to those offered in the book. The funnest part was formulating my own hypotheses about the various issues that were presented in each case. This is a must read for anyone who has been frustrated by the challenges of competitive athletics. You're not alone! However, you might find that you're #1 competitor resides in the barriers that you have built in your own mind. Learn how to knock down, or atleast, get around those self-imposed barriers.

Cat Hymns
Published in Hardcover by Quail Ridge Pr (October, 1997)
Authors: Stephen Curtis Thompson, Patti Thompson, and Bruce Bigelow
Average review score:

Enjoyment and good cause in one package
A full range of hymn performance styles - Gospel quartets, bluesgrass, blues, country ... is here performed by cats of distinction (actually it sounds as if the cats ordered their human musically inclined servants to sing as proxies).

A short list of a few of the delights:

I Will Sing of My Purina which sounds suspiciously like I Will Sing the Wondrous Story

Oh, They Tell Me of a Home which sounds suspiciously like Oh They Tell Me of a Home

Lord, I'm Coming Home the lyrics of which are only slightly odd

Tussle and Play which sounds suspiciously like Trust and Obey.

You also get the complete lyrics to sing along. An even the end pages are useful, introducing you to the cream of religious cats such as Reverend A. Jax: "To poor little kitties / Who've gone astray / He preaches salvation ... / He shows the way."
